Basically to give you a sense of how serious I am about comics...

I don't subscribe to many things. I used to subscribe to BOYS LIFE when I was little....later I subscribed to NUN'S LIFE after seeing the movie Airplane. I had a subscription to Harpers....and I keep getting charged to for a digital subscription to New York Times but its not coming to my house! (.....wait, ohhh I think I get it..)

But I recommend subscribing to this: Marvel Unlimited offers access to like 13,000+ comics. Tons and tons of back issues, clearly, like ALLLLL the way back issues. You can read full storylines from the really old days, or read X-Men stuff from the 80's and try to figure out how they got from the Chris Claremont days to the current mess... But they also have pretty recent stuff available, like within the last year. You can't get brand new newsstand stuff without buying those individual issues. But if you are a reader as opposed to a collector and you are willing to wait a bit (myself, I'm totally willing to pick up used Trade Paper Backs rather than follow stuff week to week...a lot of stuff anyways) then I CANNOT put a HIGHER recommendation on this! It is an awesome service, its $60 for the year and it pays for itself in like 5 days if you read as many comics as...well, the average comic book reader.
